Introduction
I’m excited to announce that I’ve started a new Youtube channel all about data! My name is Zac, and I’m an assistant professor at the University of Oregon’s School of Architecture and Allied Arts. (If you’re not familiar with us, we’re one of the few places in the world that offers students both architecture degrees as well as computer science degrees.) For this first video, I wanted to take a look at some of the ways data can be collected, stored and analyzed. And since it’s my first video ever on this topic… well… it’s going to be pretty basic stuff! But don’t let that discourage you from checking it out anyway! Here are some very broad topics we’ll cover:
The Great Big Data Debate
Data is everywhere, and we’re collecting more of it every day. The term “big data” has been used to describe this phenomenon, but what does that mean? Big Data isn’t a single technology, but rather a collection of technologies that allow us to collect, process and analyze data on a scale never before possible.

There are many ways in which you can define big data: how much information you have access to; how fast it’s growing; whether or not your organization has the right tools or skillset in place to handle it all efficiently (or at all). But perhaps the most important question is whether or not your business actually needs all that extra information!
The Evolution Of The Internet
The internet has come a long way. It has evolved over time to become what we know today, and it will continue to evolve in the future. The history of the internet is fascinating, but it’s also important for us to understand how our lives are changing because of this technology and what we can do about it now.
Let’s take a look at some key events that helped shape how we use computers today:
Smart Data, Dumb Data?
Data is the new oil. Data is powerful. And yet, data can be dumb or smart. It’s all in how you use it!
- Data is smart when it’s used to make decisions: Smart data turns into smart decisions that improve your business and help you grow faster than ever before.
- Data can be dumb when it isn’t used to make decisions: Dumb data just sits around gathering dust; it doesn’t do anything useful for anyone–not even itself!
Different Types of Data And Their Applications
Data is a collection of facts and statistics. Data can be used to make decisions and solve problems, it can also generate knowledge and create value by predicting future events.
Data comes in many different forms such as:
- Text – Words that are written down, such as books or magazines.
- Audio – Sound waves which are recorded onto tape or CD-ROMS (Compact Disc Read Only Memory). You’ll find audio files on websites like YouTube where people share their music tastes with others via streaming services like Spotify which allow you access millions upon millions songs at any given moment!
